Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday announced that strict action will be taken against those who are found using such cancer-causing Rhodamine-B in making the dishes.
“If anyone is found using Rhodamine-B food colouring agent, then severe action will be taken against them under the Food Safety Act,” Rao said at a press meet.
“Not following the government order can lead to seven years or a life imprisonment, and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh will also be slapped,” he added.
The health minister further said that the quality of such food items across the state was poor due to the presence of artificial colour, thereby adversely impacting one’s health, adding that drives would be conducted on other edible items where such chemicals are being used.
“Food safety in the state is our priority, and we will be inspecting more dishes to find out what colouring agents are being used in them. People should be aware of what kind of food item they are consuming and what goes into it. The restaurant owners must also be responsible enough to maintain hygiene. Otherwise, strict action will be taken,” added the health minister.
Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry also banned the sale of cotton candies last month citing the presence of cancer-causing Rhodamine-B in some samples sent for testing.
